Solita­mente, a scatenarlo sono sapori rivol­tanti, ma anche annusando, toccando e guardando si può essere colti da questa reazione. Possiamo definirla quindi un’emozione che ci difende, ci protegge, e non solo da sostanze pericolose per il nostro corpo, ma anche da persone e situazioni spiacevoli e pericolose per la nostra mente o morale. La sensazione di disgusto è suscitata anche da comporta­menti, azioni e persone che agiscono in modo che riteniamo corrotto e che met­tono in pericolo l’integrità sociale». Come per tutte le emozioni, anche in questo caso la sensibilità la fa da padrone, e ” non siamo sensibili tutti allo stesso modo”, sono importanti il fattore culturale, l’età e anche il sesso, le donne, per esempio, sono più sensibili al disgusto, probabilmente legato all’innato senso di protezione, ma al contempo i canoni socioculturali sulle donne, le inducono alla non accettazione e di conseguenza il disgusto e “l’odio di sé”.
